Turn back

You turn around and walk back in the direction you came. After walking a long while, you realize you can't see the path you took to get on this road! You must have passed it already. Oh well, there's nothing for it but to keep going. The forest slowly thins and the sunlight gets stronger and stronger. Eventually, you see a break in the treeline, and beyond that, a village. There's no wall around the village, but you do see a pair of guards standing in the road entering the village.
